Many dog owners will tell you that their pets communicate with them, however, what they are trying to say is still a mystery. However, we might be a little closer as a speech-language pathologist who is also a dog parent to an month-old dog, is working to find out. Stella is already taking to these new language skills.

One day, Stella was whining at the front door and pacing back and forth. Christina assumed that she needs to go outside to the bathroom, however, once Stella went over to her device, she was able to communicate it out. But, Stella took this very seriously! She never needs to know it was on accident! Christina, who works in San Diego with 1- and 2-year-old children — many of whom used adaptive language devices to help them communicate — began to teach Stella words when she was about 8-weeks-old.

Now, the pound-dog can identify about 29 words and can combine up to 5 of them in order to form a phrase or sentence. This shows me that words are becoming more automatic for her to use. As far as I can tell, in terms of teaching animals to speak, this is way better than what they've managed to do with chimpanzees, when trying to prove that we evolved from them. The latter can't communicate emotions, only a list of words after A LOT of training. Joe said:. Chu said:. Laura Administrator Administrator. We've all spent hours watching YouTube videos of dogs sounding like they're speaking. But one dog is actually learning to talk like a human, thanks to her patient owner.

By day, her owner, Christina Hunger, works as a speech-language pathologist, per People. But by night, she uses her skills to teach Stella how to communicate. According to Hunger, Stella already knows 29 words and can even form five-word phrases or sentences.

The system features a number of buttons that, when pressed, play a particular word out loud. Hunger began teaching Stella how to "talk" using the buttons when she was just eight weeks old. Now, Stella can reportedly express when she wants to go for a walk or to play, when she needs help, and even when she misses a particular family member.

Stella can reportedly not only say what she's feeling, but also respond to questions Hunger asks her. Through her Instagram and Hunger For Words blogHunger has also revealed that the dog's language use alters if she feels distressed. For example, when Stella hears a noise outside, she is seen pressing the button for "look" repeatedly before saying "come outside.

As Hunger explains on her blog, people have two language abilities : receptive language which is language understanding, and expressive language which is what we say. The latter isn't always verbal. Hunger figured that even though dogs cannot speak in the same way as humans, canines can express themselves in myriad other ways from barking to jumping up in the air.

She began by teaching Stella the word "outside". First, Hunger would press the button and say "outside" just before she opened the door. Eventually, Stella became aware of the connection between the word and literally going outside, and started pressing the button independently.

As Hunger began introducing more words, Stella began learning more. Hopefully, Hunger says, an accessible device that doesn't take up all your floor space will be invented. For those who want to start teaching their own dogs, there is a way. All you need is to invest in some recordable buttons and follow Hunger's guidelines. Soon, we could all be more in touch with our furry friends. It's obvious that dogs have the capacity to understand human words.

The family canine's response to "out," "walk," or "car" is both helpful and entertaining for a human, and a source of significant excitement for a pooch. Each owner or family teaches its dog a vocabulary their pet agreeably learns, with the exception of "no" and "bad," of course. So if dogs can understand our words, what kind of communication would be possible if they were able to voice them as well? The results of her experiment are amazing.

Stella's vocabulary is up now to 29 words, and she can fluidly string them together to express her desires and her feelings. The blog is called Hunger for Words. Her experiment was inspired by a quotation of Rosemary Crossley's :. Hunger explains that every human has two sorts of language capacities. First is receptive language, the ability to understand the meanings of words and sentences we hear.

Dogs as noted above, clearly have receptive language. Expressive language is how we communicate to others using words and sentences, written words, gestures, and facial expressions. Dogs regularly express themselves by barking, growling, with speech-like moaning, sighing, and of course, jumping in excitement. Hunger considers these all to be expressive language, canine-style, which suggests that they share our desire to communicate. For the mechanics of helping Stella use human words for expressing herself without a human vocal apparatus, Hunger turned to AAC technology as a pathway forward.

AAC devices are computer-based instruments that present symbols for words as big, touchable buttons. When a button is touched, the associated word sounds. Speech-challenged children learn to trigger the words they want the machine to say for them, put them together in sentences, and allow them to begin to, as Hunger says, "experience the power of language.

But through the chaos, came great communication from Stella. A press of the button plays back the word "outside," a concept right in a dog's wheelhouse. Hunger recalls, "Every time we took Stella outside we pushed 'outside' before opening the door. After a few weeks of modeling, Stella showed us she was aware of what was happening.

When I would ask, 'Outside?By Hannah Frishberg. November 5, am Updated November 5, am. Eighteen-month-old Stella already knows 29 words — and she is even stringing them into sentences. Speech-language pathologist Christina Hunger decided to combine her love for her Catahoula and Blue Heeler mix and her passion for augmentative and alternative communication AAC devices by finding a way to give her dog a voice, People first reported.

To do this, the year-old San Diegan set up a button board when Stella was 8 weeks old for the pooch to interact with and express herself. For example, some mornings Stella gets hungry first thing, and other mornings she wants to go outside before chowing down. The experiment with Stella gives Hunger hope that other dogs can also learn to more clearly communicate with people.

You tell yourself that eating that pint of ice cream was fine because you went running the day before so that cancels it out. When it comes to people making justifications about their unhealthy actions, it can be difficult to see through these excuses or recognize them for what they are. Learn more about mental health and abuse. There are a lot of people who grow up in violent homes who choose not to abuse their partners. Many choose this because of how they grew up — they know how it felt to live in that situation and they want healthier relationships for their partner and their family.

Do you find yourself making these excuses for how you act toward your partner? Being able to recognize excuses for what they are — blames, minimizations, denials — can be a step toward realizing that abuse is never the fault of the person on the receiving end.
